Surfing is Not a Crime in Pacific City, OR

An Oregon Marine Board proposed rule comment period is open that would restrict surfing in a proposed “safety zone” in Pacific City, Oregon from the south side of the Cape, approximately 1100 yards to the south. This is a truly special place for ocean and beach recreational users, a premiere destination for surfers and dory fishermen alike. Victory!

After a strong grassroots response to the proposed rule and a favorable staff report on various legal challenges, The Marine Board voted unanimously on June 24, 2015 to deny the petition to restrict surfing in the proposed “saftey zone”. Siting legal challenges with Marine Board authority to regulate surfboards and the large public opposition to restricting any user group in the area, no further actions were taken beyond denying the petition. Surfrider Foundation chapters all around the state helped to lead on this issue, submitting hundreds of comments and written letters in addition to delivering over 1600 petition signatures in opposition to the petitioned rule!
